Nardwuar interviews N*E*R*D – The Extended Version (Video)

This one goes out to all my fellow Virginia Beach heads. Nardwuar the Human Serviette from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada interviewed Pharrell and Shae from N*E*R*D. The interview is possibly one of the best interviews ever of all time. Canadian music channel, MUCH aired this interview and this interview/video alone just exemplifies just how bad our MTV really is. Nardwuar brings up Aladdin’s Castle, The Chuck Norris Karate Center in Timberlake (my hometurf), The Military Circle MallEdgar Cayce and other, you-have-to-of-lived-in-VB-to-really-know-about-it landmarks/happenings. I am as surprised as Pharrell is during the above interview right now.

All I’m going to say is that when he asked Pharrell afterward to ask Jay-Z for an interview, Pharrell emailed, texted and blew up Jay’s phone to get the guy an interview.

Oh Canada!

Dan Black – SYMPHONIES (video) & HYPNTZ (Notorious B.I.G. Cover) (.mp3)

Part Rihanna‘s “Umbrella” (edit: Garageband loop, Vintage Funk Kit 03 slowed down to 90bpm, also used in “Umbrella”), part Jack Nitzsche‘s sountrack from John Carpenter‘s amazing film, “Starman“, part Notiorious B.I.G., 100% awesome. The video above is for Dan Black‘s new single, SYMPHONIES from his upcoming album, ((un)). The song was originally released as a cover of Biggie’s “Hypnotize” (which was also mentioned in the eariler Herb Alpert post. Funny coincidence.) but for clearance reasons could not be used as a single on Dan’s album due out July 7th by (edit: found out it’s A&M/Polydor UK, yet another coincidence.) Polydor UK. He reworked it so it could be on the album and the video above is what resulted. I suggest listening to the original cover track first before watching the video. BLKN 4 LYF.

Clipse – I’m Good (Feat. Pharrell WIlliams) Behind The Scenes

Dumskeme Shomi should know better when it comes to DNS servers and Addon-Domiains, as videos in the Dumskeme Blog don’t play properly becasue the site is embedded in a giant frame. Frames went out of style before I hit puberty… so bring Dumskeme to the Shomillenium! Haha.

Shomi was invited last weekend to LA by the Clipse to film behind the scenes at the video shoot for their upcoming single off ‘Till The Casket Drops, “I’m Good” featuring hometown hero and superdupermegaultra producer, Pharrell Williams of the Neptunes. The above is the result of him coming back to Virginia and hopping on Final Cut.

I wouldn’t be here blogging/designing/creating at the level I am or with the friends & clients I’ve had opportunity working with/meeting without the support from Shomi, his colleges, the companies of theirs and those whom since moved on to start their own companies. It’s a blessing. Links are at the bottom of every page on The Cluh if you want to know more about who I’m talking about. So, how does one say “We’re Good” in Bangladesh?

Metal Militia – Hold Me Down & I.L.O. (.mp3s)

metal_militia_cluh

Metal Militia is an under–I mean, overground, hip-hop group out of Richmond, Virginia. They’re so fresh, they don’t even have a MySpace page yet. Shit, their music is so fresh that still eats, breathes and reproduces. Luckily, they bring the slaughter and kill on the mic(s) over, in opinion, murderous instrumentation. (PETA, the last two sentences we’re designed especially for y’all. Quit fretting, before I start making fly refrences too.)

It’s good to see hip-hop like this coming out of the VA side of the atmosphere. Take a listen to the following joints, kick back and light something, whether it be a bulb over your head or a fat blunt, if that’s your thing. Also check back on Friday for another Militia track in The Cluh‘s first Friday Feast featuring a .zip archive of the weeks music, plus leftovers that didn’t make it to the site.

Mash-Up Monday #2: Lil’ Jon and the East Side Boyz – Throw It Up (Lankizzle Remix) (Feat. Young Buck & Pastor Troy) (.mp3)

throw_it_up

I’ve had this song lingering in my iTunes for years. I have no clue where I found it except that it was labeled as “Lankizzle Remix” and a Google search for Lankizzle comes up with a few, songs, from a mixtape titled Lankizzle Presents Video Game Remixes V2 that contained rap acapellas over beats that contained samples from classic video games. The song featued in this Mash-Up Monday is a combination of the vocals from Lil’ John and The East Side Boyz’Throw It Up” (Feat. Young Buck & Pastor Troy) mixed with a beefed-up version of the Koji Kondo composed Sanctuary area music from The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past on the Super Nintendo. I hope to stumble across both of Lankizzle’s VG Remixes mixtapes one day.

Bill Rutherfoord – Revelationary Artist

bill_rutherfoord

When first viewing William Rutherfoord‘s art you might not expect him to be from a religious background, a son of a preacher, or even “faith-obsessed.” Hell, some of his work, at first glance, may make a religious individual think it’s the work of the devil! But, of course, it’s not. According to the article/interview from artnewyork.com posted on the press section of his website, williamhrutherfoord.com, it says Mr. Rutherfoord was born in New York City in 1950 and grew up all around the south as his father was a clergyman and that he received a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia and his Masters degree in Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. The article also states that his work has been in the Art Papers, The Oxford American Review and Noticias de Art and that “he is (also an) Adjunct Assistant Professor of Art at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Lynchburg, Virginia where he teaches drawing and lectures on contemporary art.” He’s currently living in Roanoke, Virginia with his wife and fellow artist, Beth Shively.

Not to hint at any doubt in the combination of age with regards to contemporary/street-esque art, I believe he’s the dopest 59 year old artist I know. Check out his website and read the press section for more insight on his background and the background of the work showcased on the site.

Craig Bass – Heavy Rotation & Brain Surgery (Demo) (.mp3s)

craig_bass_cluh

Craig Bass is a songwriter, performer, producer, artist and composer from Tegucigalpa, Honduras whom moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia in 1996. During that year, at the ripe age of 6, he developed an interest in music and by the time he was 14, armed with a cassette records and a radio, he started to record it. Now, at the age of 18 he’s still doing his thing– but on a larger scale and he’s working with a little more than just cassettes and radios. With several performances, mixtapes and features under his belt, Mr. Bass is setting himself up to be in heavy rotation. Check out his newest single Heavy Rotation produced by ATLien Raphie of the production group E.R. (Express & Raphie) and a bonus demo track for your ears.

You can find Craig on the internet at his Twitter, MySpace, ReverbNation page or his blog, The Adventures of Craig Bass.

Ted Wendler – Window (Demo) (.mp3)

ted_wendler

Fraaie, ingetogen songs. Van een man met een gitaar.Alankomaat.org

I think the above says something about how my roommate Ted Wendler is from Minneapolis, Minnesota and is currently in Atlanta working on an album and making some hot verschijnt. Also it may say something about how he records rough tracks onto his laptop and that he writes, sings and plays gitaar.

J. Cole – The Warm-Up (Mixtape)

j_cole_the_warm_upI don’t even have to explain this one in detail. J. Cole is the next big thing to come from Fayetteville, North Carolina outside of my friend Steve LaClair‘s skateboard multimeda site, skateperception.com. It’s a given that Cole will soon creep up on that international status like SP. If you don’t know, you’ll know.

Now, all I’m pondering about is that if this is for free, how the fuck is the paid shit going to be!?

Verse Simmonds – Buy You A Round (Up and Down) (.mp3)

verse_simmonds

Verse Simmonds hails from St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, is signed to Interscope and is affiliated with fellow V.Islanders, Rock City (Theron and Timothy Thomas.) The song, “Buy You A Round (Up and Down)” was played on Norfolk State University‘s Hot 91.1 a few days ago when Verse and Rock City were at the station interviewing with Cymandye while promoting the music and a show they had… but regardless of what station you listen to, or where you’re at, the song is definitely worth a request.

Head to radio-locator.com, find your favorite local station, hit them up about it, then wait for the song to play. If you’re the lazy type or can’t wait for it on the radio, the track is below:

The Jealousy Game – The Shakedown (Music Video)

This video was shot, edited and directed by my VA roommates/friends, Visually Inklined (Kory Smith & Tremayne Johnson) and Robert Simmons. They describe it as “(a) performance based video for Raleigh’s (NC) The Jeolousy Game (that) was done in one night on a rooftop garage in Downtown Norfolk (VA) (with) many of the lens flares and lighting effects created practically as camera tricks instead of being made digitally.”

I describe it as “why the fuck isn’t this video on MTV?

No Regard – There’s Nothing Wrong & She’s (What They Want) (.mp3s)

no_regardHarley McCartney, Melvin OgleBee & Illien Rosewell hail from my hometown Virginia Beach, VA and are in a hip-hop band called No Regard. From what I gather based on the content on their MySpace/website they affliate themselves as The Astronaut Crew. You can find them on iTunes if you like the music and want to support/hear more. Their music is type of shit both rap and rock stations could play without regard to genre… now listen to it for yourself, courtesy of The Cluh.
