While I’ve never been the biggest fan of Eminem‘s early days, nor a fan of his antics, I have come to appreciate the emergence of his sensitive side lately. While fame and fortune often corrupt young artists, it seems to have taken Eminem the reverse route and somewhat normalized him. This may have something to do with raising a young daughter, or just could be a coming of age.
“Beautiful” can be categorized with some of his toned down and sensible moments (i.e. peformance with Elton John, recent appearance on Jimmy Fallon – ironically the same night as a humbled Mike Tyson).
While the song may lack some of the better musical production that has graced Eminem, the message is probably one of the strongest and clearest Eminem has ever written. The video is a touching tribute to the people of DETROIT (and the state of Michigan). A city that has lost more jobs and gross product than some large countries have ever had to begin with.
Hang in there Detroit! America still loves you.
