‘The Future‘ is a 2008 album by Swedish electronic music producer, Beem (Fredrik Mjelle) that features cover art for each of its tracks with vintage synthesizers and drum machines built from LEGO bricks by designer Frans Enmark. Listeners can expect a funky, jazzy, bassy experience when embarking on this 10 track musical high available legally and free of charge. The song ‘Ep9‘, whether intended or not, contains a melody reminiscent of the Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway ‘Be Real Black for Me‘ sample used in rapper Scarface‘s 2002 single, ‘My Block‘ and it’s really, really cool. There’s also track made entirely with sounds from soda cans! Below is a video of a live version of ‘Mouth Everest.’

Electronic group, Pnuma Trio on 1320 Records, has teamed up with Conscious Alliance to help bring emergency food to communities most in need. Their recent performance, recorded at the 9,000+ person capacity Red Rocks Amphitheatre outside of Denver, Colorado (part of STS9‘s sold out Day Out Of Time Celebration) has been released online as a free download with 100% of all donations going to Conscious Alliance.

This tribute, titled Da Chip! is a project spearheaded by a French musician by the name Je deviens dj en 3 jours that consists of video game music (chiptune) inspired remakes of Daft Punk songs from various chiptune composers. It’s awesome; so awesome that I just danced to it in my room by myself for about 15 minutes straight but then again, I also have a soft spot for video games and chiptune music while also being a fan of Daft Punk. Outside of the links to download the tribute and the bonus tracks, I’ve selected a few tracks that can be listened to from this blog entry. The first song I chose is from UK chiptune musician, Microchip‘s rendition of One More Time from DP’s Discovery album. It makes me feel nostalgic to the times I used to watch the skateboard video, Chomp On This (which happened to have somewhat a video game inspired theme to it, via it’s use of Pac Man imagery) everyday after school before going skateboarding.

The second track, covering Daft Punk’s Superheroes, from Spanish artist, Stage7 translates the Barry Manilow sample driven song into bleep-bloopy goodness. It also makes me think DP sampled the title track from the Super Nintendo game, Top Gear, for the bridge of the song even more. (Seems also the sound has also been used in the band Muse song Bliss.)

I had saw the video for Brooklyn, NY based Richard Spitzer, known musically as NITE CLUB and his cover of Kanye West’s “Good Life” from Poolsidesign and directed by Yuichi Uchida a few weeks ago, loved it then shot him an email requesting permission to post some .mp3′s on the site. He responded earlier today and gave me the ok– so enjoy the Kanye cover and the sure-to-make-you-move, “Left Right” from NITE CLUB’s new LP “My Tronic” available now in stores and on iTunes, guilt free!

This one goes out to all my fellow Virginia Beach heads. Nardwuar the Human Serviette from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada interviewed Pharrell and Shae from N*E*R*D. The interview is possibly one of the best interviews ever of all time. Canadian music channel, MUCH aired this interview and this interview/video alone just exemplifies just how bad our MTV really is. Nardwuar brings up Aladdin’s Castle, The Chuck Norris Karate Center in Timberlake (my hometurf), The Military Circle Mall,  Edgar Cayce and other, you-have-to-of-lived-in-VB-to-really-know-about-it landmarks/happenings. I am as surprised as Pharrell is during the above interview right now.

All I’m going to say is that when he asked Pharrell afterward to ask Jay-Z for an interview, Pharrell emailed, texted and blew up Jay’s phone to get the guy an interview.

Herb Alpert is the man. He started A&M Records with Jerry Moss in 1962 (naming it that after they had found out Carnival Records was taken by another company.) A&M stands for “Alpert & Moss.” The A&M logo also pays homage to Alpert’s instrument of choice, the trumpet.

The label houses/housed musical acts such as Herb Alpert’s Tijuana Brass, George Benson, The Brothers Johnson, Al Green, The Human League, Toby Keith, The Carpenters, Quincy Jones, Joe Cocker, Cheech & Chong, Snow Patrol, Maroon 5, Bill Withers, The Black Eyed Peas, Shanice, Nazareth, Pussycat Dolls, Iggy Pop, Payolas, Queen (to A&M Canada), Sound Garden, Styx, Sex Pistols (only for a week though, right after EMI dropped them), Ike & Tina Turner, Atlantic Starr, MxPx, Mya, The Police, Sun Ra and Janet Jackson. You know, just to drop a few names.

Herb’s and his band, The Tijuana Brass did the title music for the original Casino Royal and Alpert is also the only artist ever to have placed five albums on the Billboard Pop Album Chart at the one time.

According to his Wikipedia article, “(His) musical accomplishments include five number one hits, twenty-eight albums on the Billboard charts, eight Grammy Awards,  fourteen Platinum albums and fifteen Gold albums (and) as of 1996, (he) had sold 72 million albums worldwide.”

The song featured in the video above, Rise was from his 1979 album of the same name won a Grammy and was sampled in the Notorious B.I.G.’s 1997 song “Hypnotize.”
