g2{fx} & Phillip Morton – Clyde Comedy Launch (Video)

Gene Gonzales, known as g2{fx}, is a motion graphics extraordinaire residing in Norfolk, Virginia. Gene is currently the art director for WVEC.TV 13 and is responsible for 13 News having the best looking motion graphics out of all the 757 news programs, period. With 10 Emmy awards, a BDA award and an Addy under his belt for his outstanding work, it’s hard to argue.

The above piece, a promo/launch video for Clyde Comedy (clydecomedy.com) was produced by Philip Morton with Gene as Mr. Motion Director man. It’s look and feel was developed from inspiration from Saul Bass‘ work (designer of the original Psycho title sequence) and the title sequence of ‘Catch Me If You Can.’

More of Gene’s award winning work can be viewed at http://g2fx.com and Gene can also be followed on Twitter @g2fx.

Mash-Up Monday #7: Irn Mnky – How Soon Is MVP? (Big L vs. The Smiths) (.mp3)

big_l_smiths_mash-up

I found this track while searching Google looking for a video or a photo of rapper Big L writing to see what hand he wrote with– as I pondered, “Big L? Maybe he’s left handed?” I didn’t find anything relevant to that, so I guess he recited off the dome… but I did stumble across this mash-up of Big L’s M.V.P. and The SmithsHow Soon Is Now? titled How Soon Is MVP? The track was mashed-up by Irn Mnky of the (from what I gather) British DJ/Production collective The White Eyed Tigers. Also check out Irn Mnky’s A Very British American Gangster mash-up tape of Jay-Z‘s American Gangster ‘pellas over various music from British artists old and new.

Stage 7 – Superheroes (Daft Punk Cover) (.mp3)

stage_7

You may remember Stage7 from my previous posting of his chiptune/8bit cover of the Daft Punk song Superheroes in the Da Chip! write-up. He intended to release the song with the Barry Manilow sample from the original intact for the compilation but couldn’t due to a reasonable no-sampling clause in the Da Chip! project rules. In a comment, he supplied a link to the original describing it as an “improved version of Superheroes that contains [the Manilow] sample (AND the rimshot in the beginning)” The sample kind of reminds me of the Skate or Die 2 synthesized voice.

Check out Stage7 and his other music on the interwebs at http://stg7.net.

Christian Rich – Famous Girl (Video) & (.mp3)

These Chicago dudes, Christian Rich have produced music over the years for Diddy, Lil’ Kim, Clipse, Mickey Factz amongst others. Ali Shaheed Mohammed from A Tribe Called Quest called them “the future of music” and luckily for us, they’re working on their own project now. The video above for “Famous Girl” has been on pretty much every MTV network, Fuse and big bloggins such as 2dopeboyz, ONsmash, Complex, DailyMotion amongst others.

They’re also going to be on the You Should Know Better Vol. 1 mixtape presented by Dumskeme Clothing and The Cluh. More info on that will be posted on here, the Dumskeme blog, my Twitter and the Dumskeme Twitter as the project nears completion.

Bossman – Off The Record Part 2 (.mp3)

bossman

Rapper Bossman from Baltimore, Maryland whom over the years went from being signed to Virgin/SoSoDef, leaving after they merged with Columbia, to having a $2.5 million deal through Sony and now is signed to MySpace Records through Interscope and is preparing for his 2009 release “Home Of The Wire.” This track, titled “Off The Record Part 2” is Bossman’s self-attributed response to Jay-Z‘s D.O.A. (Death of Autotune) record. He also goes in on some topics other rappers haven’t rawly addressed. He says DJ’s might not spin it and radio might not play it– but the listeners will…

HiClas! – If You (Freestyle) (As They Wonder) (.mp3)

hi_class

My man, HiClas! from Chicago, IL, freestyled over VA homie, Max Mega‘s track, “If You” featuring Justin Battle, from his debut tape, “For The Listeners…” If I remember correctly, Gabe Niles produced the track. Either way, the track is dope– even though I can barely follow Clas’ words due to my circadian rhythm being all funked up from working too much lately. Big up’s to Max for allowing Clas to hock loogies all over the instrumental. That’s peer 2 peer sharing at it’s best. Learn from it.

Also, I finally got my camera back– so keep on the look out for a no-budget video for Max Mega’s “HipHopIsGood” featuring Artie Ziff we shot before I got all Thurgood a month or so ago.

Mash-Up Monday #6: The Hood Internet – Make The Loop Say Aye (OJ Da Juiceman vs Discovery) (.mp3)

When OJ Da Juice Man‘s track “Make The Trap Say Aye” featuring Gucci Mane hit the streets months ago, I wasn’t too thrilled with it. Then months later ABX from The Hood Internet took the song “Osaka Loop Line” from the Vampire Weekend/Ra Ra Riot member filled project Discovery and mish-mashed it with the Trap Say Aye song and made it 200% better. I danced to it while repeatedly saying “aye!” like a cartoon. I won’t lie.

Intalek – Believe The Hype: Best of Intalek (Mixtape)

Intalek - Believe The Hype (front)

With the heavy increase on lyricism budding in the hip hop world today, artists find themselves standing out more and more by the hour. Music seems to be reaching a new renaissance with underground, independent, and rising artists placing more emphasis in what they say and how it is being conveyed. Intalek, a 22-year-old rising hip hop star from Virginia Beach, VA, seems right at home with the new wave of music. With the success of his two online underground mixtapes, Square One: The Mixtape in 2008 and HelloSpaceWorld earlier in 2009, Intalek links up with super producer Grussle of the DC-based production group The VilliaNz to create a compilation of his new and previous works to give his fans something to enjoy. The Believe The Hype: Best of Intalek mixtape hosted by me, Ray of Rbj-mag.com gives his fans more than they bargained for, with commentary from Intalek, himself, along with songs and freestyles that showcase his knack for lyricism, flow, and his uncanny yet witty foundation within hip hop. Fans and new listeners, alike, will definitely appreciate this breath of fresh air Intalek is giving the hip hop world.

Paul Rodriguez & Ice Cube – Today Was a Good Day (NikeSB Advertisment) (Video)

It’s been over 6 months since I last skateboarded. I miss the shit out of it and being too busy is a lame excuse for it too. Oh well. Earlier I was linked to this video for a Nike SB ad featuring Paul Rodriguez skateboarding in Los Angleles, California over Ice Cube‘s 1993 hit “It Was A Good Day.” The video has cameos from Theotis Beasley, legend Lance Mountain and Mr. Cube himself.

The album version of the song is 4 minutes and 20 seconds long. Chuuuuuch.

Throwback Thursday #4: C+C Music Factory – Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now) (1990)

Legend has it that in the United States during the late 1980‘s and 1990‘s people actually had fun dancing in clubs– to acts such as C+C Music Factory, La Bouche, Snap!, 69 Boyz, Tag Team and pretty much every artist featured on ESPN‘s Jock Jams compilation series. I wasn’t mature enough during the 1990’s to experience the fun for myself, but by the looks of the accompanying music videos (that we’re actually played on television) the imagery of people having fun while dancing is evident.

The C+C Music Factory, consisted of producers Robert Clivillés and David Cole (R.I.P) with various supporting members, including Freedom Williams rapping and Deborah Cooper singing the main vocals as heard above in their 1990 hit, Gonna Make You Sweat. Clivillés and Cole also produced for Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam and many others.

Also, I do know it’s Friday.
